External Critic at AHO

Tin served as an external sensor on the self-programmed master course, “Å røre det urørte”, by Karoline Borander Holmestrand and Karen Stormoen Mykland. Their supervisor was Erling Dokk Holm.

Their thesis went into the cabin culture of Norway, and what role does the architect have in terms of conserving the natural environment they are set in. Another question they posed was if architects are knowledgable enough to make the right decisions in terms of securing sustainable solutions for the future? Their thesis went beyond the profession of architecture and delved into an array of topics such as politics, local/national legislation, commerce, tourism, history of mother nature and outdoors culture, biodiversity, contamination, natural habitats, water management, national image and mentality etc. In their concluding remarks, Karoline and Karen devised a list of recommendations for the legislation, nature conservation and design philosophy surrounding the contemporary Norwegian cabin culture.

As mentioned in Tin’s assessment:

what these two students demonstrate, is both a powerful and creative will to investigate all the obvious and the not-so-obvious strands related to their topic. Many of the chapters took an unsuspected turn, and the students show a clear sense of integrity of where the profession should head. Two thumbs up, A+ if there was such a grading system for master courses at AHO.”
