CIB W070: Awarded Best Paper 1. Prize on First Try
Winning a CIB W070 "Best Paper Award" is a significant recognition of one's academic work in Facilities Management (FM) research, but winning for your first paper as a fellow, is considered highly rare. Tin & Knut Boge (co-author/supervisor) achieved this for their paper, The Norwegian proptech market - an incubator for game changers, at one of the leading communities in FM, CIB W070 Conference - International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction.
High Mileage for the Underdog Paper
Tin & Knut (co-author & supervisor) paper was an underdog in the conference, as their paper gave an overview of the entire value chain/linear process (stage 1.-8), and not just FM - which falls under the last stag, 8. Mainenance, Operations and Management (M.O.M.). This very same paper gained high mileage at the conference: it being Tin’s first peer-reviewed paper (1/3 articles of his article-based PhD), winning the top prize against 46 other papers, and not least, getting handpicked as 1 out of 3 papers to discuss 3 ISO standards-in-themaking, in the “Meeting of Minds” session between FM researchers and ISO experts. Tin was also questioned by Antje Junghans, a Swiss Professor, on the research design of the paper, followed up with the pivotal question: “Why not the Swiss proptech market?”, and Tin would remark that the research design is applicable to any country. In the acceptance speech, Knut would go on to say: “…this was unexpected”, with Tin’s speech being “…it is funny how a non-FM paper would go on to win Best Paper in an FM conference”.
Best Paper Review Process
All the papers went through a double-blind peer review, before being shortlisted to 8 outstanding papers for their relevance of the results, the methodological craftmanship and the communication. The reviewers had various preferences and had to make individual preferences, and these entered the systematic weighting to identify the top 3. In entering the top 3, the top papers got a second review by the International Advisory Board Awards. Given to one or teams for their outstanding contributions to a specific field of research. These awards recognize excellence in original research, innovative thinking, and the quality of expected impact of published work.
FM+ISO - Meeting of Minds
As mentioned, Tin & Knut’s paper was selected as 1/3 papers to be discussed between FM researchers and ISO experts. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was also present at the event, with an entire day dedicated to discuss 3 top secret standards-in-the-making - meaning 3 researchers would comment on their standards, and 3 ISO experts commenting 3 papers. They were as following:
Performance measurement and management ISO/TC 267 WG
Influencing organizational behaviours for improved facility outcomes ISO 41015:2023
Framework for applying digital technology ISO/TC 267
Tin & Knut’s paper served as the discussion material for the standard on applying digital technology, requiring FM expert Knut to sign a non-disclosure-agreement (NDA) before reading and critiquing ISO/TC 267, while Gordon Mitchell commented Tin & Knut’s paper. Any further details on this session will not be disclosed.
…well, we’ll disclose this: Knut got to quote one of his intellectual heroes, Douglass North.
