LAA350 Askim Event

The entire LAA350 cohort ‘24 was invited to Askim to present their findings for the stakeholders from both public and private sector. The entire session consisted of lectures from the mayor, city planning office, followed up by the student's’ project presentations, summary on key findings, and a panel debate led by Tin with all the parties represented - the students, the developers, and the planning authority.

The program of the day was as following:

  • 10.00: Doors open coffee/tea

  • 10.15: Welcome – Ordfører Saxe Frøshaug welcomes – försteamanuensis Anja Standal (NMBU) introduces the course

  • 10.30: Student presentations from 14 project teams.

  • 11.30: Summary and reflections from NMBU and the municipality.

  • 11.45: Break, mingling and packed lunch

  • 12.20: Panel dialogue/led by Tin: subject manager and students v/NMBU, planning manager Kristian Larsen and city architect Therese Øijord Rustad v/Indre Østfold Kommune and property developers Clarksons (Ole-Jacob), Stasjonskvartalet (Ottar) and Svarstad Eiendom (Erik) .

  • 12.45: Summary and conclusion

 

The 14 teams and their projects consisted of:

  1. Badebyen - how a public swimming facility pose as a generator for place identity, improved public health, and drawing point.

  2. Fullt Fyr - how can the city center be brought to life through cultural planning?

  3. Big Box - Leave the big box, or let it go?

  4. Askim vannportal - How can the floodwaters in Askim be used as a generator and a multifunctional resource to create good accessible urban spaces?

  5. Veier til vekst - the development of a vibrant neighborhood promoting social belonging and increasing citizen rate.

  6. Gamlebyen i Askim - the creation of an area that is well-suited for an older population, and connecting a fragmented neighborhood.

  7. Byromsglede - project area function as a focal point for commerce, work and life in the heart of Askim and Inner Østfold.

  8. Askim Basar - building good connections in the city center and creating an active urban floors.

  9. Barriere til bygulv - how can the area characterized by a heavily trafficked road be transformed from being a barrier to becoming a resource?

  10. Barn i sentrum - the makings of of an attractive place to move to, through school structure.

  11. Nye Askim sentrum - the problematisation of barriers, unused space, few city center functions.

  12. Askimporten - the first meeting with Askim and the transition from a car-based society to softer mobility.

  13. Brinken - social mixed-use on a challenging hub site, loaded with planning ambitions, where busy infrastructure and terrain create barriers

  14. Rådhustorget - the city hall as a natural center of gravity in Askim and Indre Østfold municipality.

The course LAA350 - Projects in Urban Planning is a 20 ECTS course, focusing on the urban development of the city centre in the medium-sized city Askim. The course encourages studies of structures, massing and in-between spaces. LAA350 was conceived and previously led by professor Elin Børrud, before her departure this year. The teaching staff consist of Anja Standal, the new course responsible (BYREG), Mads Juel Engh (LA), and Tin Phan (EIEJUSS).
