LAA350 - RFP

Tin’s swan song lecture and workshop on RFP - Space, functions and program. This might be the last lecture he will hold at NMBU, as his contract expires in February 2025. In essence, LAA350’s scope is early stage concept development from idea to massing study, and this lecture goes beyond that scope. Because the next step, is actually breaking down the massing study of one program (P), into smaller functions (F) and spaces (R). This is the necessary a step to closing the gap between early stage concept, and late stage construction blueprint.

This lecture consists of two parts: a lecture showing examples of how RFP plays out in architectural objects/programs, and how it plays out in urban plots. Very similar to the prior lecture and workshop, Concept, the idea is to identify their overarching idea, and visualise the spatial guidelines on a piece of paper. In the same spirit, the workshop consisted of 4 very simple bulletpoints:

  1. context - copy/paste their midterm review.

  2. problem - copy/paste their midterm review.

  3. overarching idea - copy/paste or revise their midterm review, according to the critique they got the day before.

  4. spatial guidelines - the actual workshop: visualise on tracing paper how their overarching idea plays out on their plot, accordingly to these drawing categories:

    • building type, or the program.

    • RFP, an estimate of how their program, spaces and functions are divided and put together.

    • Massing, or volumes, density of their project and the logic according to program.

    • Urban space, how the massing’s define spaces and its relation to massing.

    • Mobility, how roads, lanes, walkways, elevators, stairwells connects urban spaces and volumes proposed.

The students had to fill out a form, and were handed out. Here are some examples on bulletpoint 4, Spatial guidelines in drawings.

Swan Song

In remembrance of Tin’s last lecture at NMBU and Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” playing in the background, he held a brief seanse of his culinary mastery that was well-documented at the midterm seminar of the LAA350 projects. Tin also wanted to remind the students of the lemonies cakes he slaved over the stove the day before this seminar. He also bought 4l ice cream to go. The small seanse consisted of reflections such as, what is too much and what is too little cake? Which students deserved more cake than other? Who did not deserve anything at all? Tin with this cake, he aimed to impart som wisdom to the students: there are no justice in this world, than the one you make for yourself. He also brought home two randoms to finish the cakes for 100+ guests. After finishing the baking, transporting the lemonies to the midterm seminar and carrying back the boxes and ice cream, he found out that the 4l of vanilla ice cream had spilled inside his suitcase. It was also here Tin would utter his famous line: “even though my baking would affect my quality of life, for you guys, I would do it 10 times over again”. Tin also wanted the students’ opinion on his purchase of two supercool hats:

The cake was also a reminder of the midterm evaluation of the teachers and the LAA350 course. That’s all folks.

The course LAA350 - Projects in Urban Planning is a 20 ECTS course, focusing on the urban development of the city centre in the medium-sized city Askim. The course encourages studies of structures, massing and in-between spaces. LAA350 was conceived and previously led by professor Elin Børrud, before her departure this year. The teaching staff consist of Anja Standal, the new course responsible (BYREG), Mads Juel Engh (LA), and Tin Phan (EIEJUSS).
